In 2025, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) was named the busiest airport in the world. This marks the 27th time in 28 years that Atlanta has held this title. The Airports Council International released the annual list, ranking airports based on passenger numbers from the prior year.
Atlanta Airport welcomed over 106 million passengers in 2025, continuing its strong position. Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD) is now the third busiest in America but did not surpass Atlanta. ORD had a significant increase in flights, mainly from United Airlines and American Airlines.
Worldwide, Dubai International Airport (DXB) kept its second place, while Tokyo’s Haneda Airport (HND) secured the third position. Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) moved up to the fifth place, showing impressive growth.
O’Hare reported a 6% rise in passenger numbers compared to 2024. It also had the most takeoffs and landings worldwide, increasing by nearly 11%. However, the Federal Aviation Administration may step in to manage congestion and reduce flight delays.
Heathrow Airport in London dropped from fifth to seventh, and Denver International Airport fell from sixth to tenth. ATL maintained its lead partly because Delta increased its flights.
