There are five types of rhinos still alive today. They are very strong, with thick skin and big horns. The white rhino is the largest. It can weigh up to 3,500 kg, which is like a small motorhome. The smallest species, the Sumatran rhino, can weigh 1,000 kg, which is about the same as two grand pianos.
Rhinos are usually calm animal eaters, also known as herbivores. Because they are so heavy, adults do not have natural enemies. They walk on three toes per foot and like to eat plants. Rhinos can only see things clearly that are close. They get scared easily, so loud noises or sudden movements can make them charge.
When they charge, they can run quite fast. White rhinos can reach 40 miles per hour, while black rhinos can run at 35 miles per hour. Sumatran rhinos can go up to 25 miles per hour. However, they cannot keep this speed for long.
If you find yourself in danger from a charging rhino, experts suggest you should try to avoid such situations. If it comes close, hide behind something big or run in a zig-zag. Staying calm can help because most charges are just threats.
