Bret Michaels and The Commodores have withdrawn from the Freedom 250 concert series in Washington, D.C. Their departures highlight ongoing difficulties surrounding President Donald Trump’s patriotic event.
Bret Michaels, lead singer of Poison, expressed his concerns in a statement on his website. He stated, “What was presented to us as a celebration of our country has evolved into something much more divisive.” Michaels highlighted alarming threats to his safety and that of his staff and family as a significant factor in his decision to pull out of the event.
Emphasising his personal beliefs, he said, “This isn’t about politics. It’s about staying true to what I’ve always believed in.” As a father, friend, and bandmate, he takes safety matters seriously. He noted that music should unite rather than divide people, recalling a successful Independence Day concert in St. Louis that brought together over 100,000 attendees.
The Commodores joined other artists, including Young MC and Martina McBride, in stepping away from the concert series. They stated on Instagram, “Our music has always been our voice and we choose not to publicly affiliate with any political party. We support the betterment of all Americans.”
The Freedom 250 concert series is scheduled to take place from June 25 to July 10 on the National Mall. This event aims to celebrate 250 years since the Declaration of Independence and is backed by a public-private partnership connected to the Trump administration.
