Review of Steven Soderbergh’s Cannes Doc on John Lennon

Beatlemania continues, evolving into a lasting legacy. After the Beatles split up over fifty years ago, they still attract attention through compilation albums, remastered music, and even a new song created with machine-learning technology. Their influence also appears in films that celebrate their cultural impact. Many movies and musicals use their songs, and the Beatles have been portrayed by actors as well as themselves in various productions.

In the 1990s, “The Beatles Anthology” was a key documentary about the band. Then, in 2016, Ron Howard’s “The Beatles: Eight Days a Week” started a new wave of documentaries. These films often use new technology to improve old footage. Peter Jackson’s “Get Back,” about the making of “Let It Be,” is very popular for its new insights into the band’s work. Other films, like “Beatles ’64,” also aim to attract fans from different generations.

Recently, Steven Soderbergh released “John Lennon: The Last Interview.” This documentary features an interview John and Yoko gave shortly before his tragic death. The film mainly showcases this conversation along with various visuals. However, some viewers may find Soderbergh’s method of illustrating the interview too literal and less engaging. The film blends historical footage with modern technology but doesn’t fully succeed in capturing the essence of the interview. “The Last Interview” premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival and is now seeking U.S. distribution.
