Since 2021, unofficial Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) conventions have emerged across the United States, driven by growing interest in the hobby. Prior to the pandemic, large Pokémon TCG events were uncommon and lacked today’s commercial appeal. Many of these newer shows mainly focus on buying and selling, attracting a segment sometimes referred to as “investor bros.”
Conversely, “Card Party” distinguishes itself by prioritising community interaction over commerce. While it does allow card trading, the convention promotes connections among fans who share a passion for Pokémon. Combining elements of a card show, fan convention, and creator conference, Card Party offers much more than mere vendor browsing.
Now in its fourth year, Card Party is unique as it brings numerous notable Pokémon TCG community members together for games, activities, and live events. The upcoming event in San Diego is set to attract fans after a recent Seattle show that welcomed over 8,000 attendees and hundreds of vendors. Organiser Pat Flynn (Deep Pocket Monster) works alongside community members to develop the programme.
Participants engage in friendly competition by joining either Team Red or Team Blue, earning points through live shows and various activities. The convention creates a lively, competitive atmosphere, where attendees forge friendships and share experiences.
As night falls, attendees gather for live performances featuring creators and audience members. The overall atmosphere is vibrant, fostering a true celebration of the Pokémon TCG community while ensuring a family-friendly environment.
Card Party successfully fills a gap left by official events, providing an intimate and community-driven experience for Pokémon TCG enthusiasts. Upcoming events will be held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Dallas, Texas, later this year.
