Scientists Identify Vagus Nerve Link Between Food and Memory

Food is important during special moments in our lives, like weddings and family dinners. A new study says that good food may help us remember these moments better.

Scott Kanoski, a biologist at the University of Southern California, led the study published in Nature Communications. The research shows that food can affect how we form memories because of signals sent through a nerve called the vagus nerve, which runs from the gut to the brain.

In experiments with rats, researchers found that after eating a nutritious meal, a signal travels from the gut to a part of the brain called the medial septum. This area is linked to the hippocampus, where memories are formed. When food enters the gut, it helps release a chemical called acetylcholine, which is important for memory.

However, the study also found that a diet high in fat and sugar can harm memory. Rats fed a junk food diet early in life struggled with memory tasks later, even after eating healthier food.

These findings may help scientists find better ways to support memory in humans through gut-brain communication. The researchers note that more studies are needed to see if these results apply to people.
