NASA to Host Blue Origin Rockets for Testing After Launch Pad Incident

Blue Origin recently faced a major setback when its New Glenn rocket exploded on its launch pad. This was particularly concerning as it was the only pad in the world capable of handling the New Glenn rocket. NASA, which relies on Blue Origin to help return astronauts to the Moon, has stepped in to assist. The space agency announced plans to modify its B-2 testing pad at the Stennis Space Center in Mississippi to accommodate the New Glenn’s upper stage. While this pad will not be used for launches, it will enable necessary testing to resume.

The Stennis Space Center has a rich history; it was the site where the Saturn V rocket was tested during the Apollo program, which famously took astronauts to the Moon. Similarly, the Space Shuttle was also tested there, and more recently, NASA’s Space Launch System was trialed at this location. This marks the first occasion that a private rocket, like New Glenn, will use this historically significant site. Jared Isaacman, NASA’s Administrator, emphasized the importance of collaboration with the commercial sector to succeed in the new space race.

Blue Origin has recently secured several contracts with NASA. Its Blue Moon Mark 1 lander is set to transport materials to the lunar surface. The company is actively rebuilding the destroyed launch pad, with plans to complete the work by the end of the year. If successful, this will allow New Glenn to return to flight without needing extensive testing of the upper stage.
