Mars Petcare US has voluntarily recalled two batches of Pedigree-branded dog food due to the potential contamination with metal and plastic. This recall, announced on 2 July, particularly concerns 13.2-ounce cans of High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck Flavor for dogs, identified by lot codes 613C3KKCFC and 613C1KKCFC.
The affected products did not comply with the safety and quality standards set by Mars and Pedigree. During a routine quality control check, these two lots were meant to be destroyed by a third-party vendor. However, Mars subsequently discovered that the products had been illicitly diverted and sold to the U.S. market.
The company warned that ingesting sharp foreign materials can result in serious health risks for dogs, including choking, lacerations, or blockages in the gastrointestinal tract. Given these dangers, Mars has urged consumers not to feed the recalled dog food to their pets and to reach out for replacements.
Pet owners who have potentially fed their dogs the recalled products are advised to consult a veterinarian for guidance. While the company confirmed that no illnesses or injuries have been reported related to this incident, it acknowledged the importance of addressing consumer concerns.
Currently, Mars is collaborating with authorities to investigate how these contaminated products entered the marketplace. The company reaffirms its commitment to pet safety and consumer education, as it works to ensure affected items are identified and removed from circulation.
