In a striking turnaround, the video game Cyberpunk 2077, which faced a troubled launch, has achieved remarkable success after extensive updates. Released in December 2020 by CD Projekt Red (CDPR), the game has now sold over 40 million copies in 5.5 years, marking a significant milestone.
This sales figure ties Cyberpunk 2077 with a record in the current decade, the 2020s. Among multiplatform games, it shares the 40 million sales mark with Hogwarts Legacy, though the latter reached that figure more quickly after its 2023 release. In comparison, only one title, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, has sold more during this decade, with 50 million copies sold on a single platform.
With its current sales, Cyberpunk 2077 stands ranked as the 19th best-selling game of all time. Other notable games, like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Elden Ring, have sold around 30 million copies since 2020. Additionally, the games released in the top 50 since 2020 include titles like Phasmophobia and Pokemon Scarlet/Violet.
The game’s expansion, Phantom Liberty, has further contributed to its sales, with 10 million copies sold at an average price of $30. CDPR aims to build on the game’s success while developing a sequel and a new title in the Witcher series. Although Cyberpunk 2077 had significant issues at launch, it still sold 13 million copies in its first ten days.
Looking ahead, CDPR is expected to take lessons from its previous experience to ensure a smoother launch for the upcoming sequel.
