CVS Pharmacy is expanding its services to include pet health care, allowing customers to fill common prescriptions for dogs and cats at nearly 9,000 locations across the United States. This development is significant as it provides pet owners with more convenient options for obtaining medications for their pets.
The pharmacy will offer a selection of medications, including antibiotics, allergy treatments, flea and tick control products, insulin, and pain relievers. Pet owners can either bring a written prescription to a CVS location or have their veterinarian contact the pharmacy directly. Some prescriptions will also be available for delivery.
This expansion presents pet owners with alternative access outside veterinary offices, online pet pharmacies, and specialty retailers. It is particularly helpful for those needing to refill ongoingprescriptions for pets that require regular treatment.
CVS has stated that eligible pet prescriptions will benefit from services available for human medications, such as automatic refills and prescription synchronization. Additionally, pet owners can add their animals to their CVS.com profiles and manage prescriptions through the CVS Health app. The company plans to introduce electronic prescribing capabilities for veterinarians in the coming months.
Sid Tenneti, CVS Health’s senior vice president, expressed that with this addition, CVS can cater to every family member. Furthermore, CVS has broadened its range of pet food, grooming, and wellness products in stores and online.
However, CVS has not disclosed expectations for how much the new prescription service might impact sales. CVS Health operates around 9,000 retail pharmacy locations and over 1,000 clinics across the country.
