Nine people got sick after eating lettuce at Cheshire Medical Center in Keene, New Hampshire. This was confirmed by state health officials on Thursday.
The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is looking into other possible cases linked to this situation. Dartmouth Health reported that 16 people, including 10 workers, were exposed to cyclosporiasis. Cyclosporiasis is an infection that comes from contaminated food.
The lettuce has been recalled by Taylor Farms due to a larger outbreak. The hospital no longer serves this lettuce, and all salad bar choices have been removed for now. There have been no cases of cyclosporiasis among patients who stayed at the hospital.
DHHS advises anyone who ate lettuce at the center from early June to July 20 to see a doctor if they have severe watery diarrhea. Some symptoms can develop within a week of eating infected food. Health experts say there have been over 11,000 cases of cyclosporiasis across the country since May.
