Buc-ee’s, a well-known convenience store chain, has filed a lawsuit against Beaver’s Mini Mart in Beavercreek, Ohio, claiming trademark infringement. This legal action has drawn attention to the small business, which is now at the centre of a national debate.
The lawsuit was submitted in late July. Buc-ee’s argues that Beaver’s Mini Mart is using a cartoon beaver logo and red colours that closely resemble its own trademarked branding. Buc-ee’s states that it has used this logo for over forty years and holds multiple federal trademark registrations.
Buc-ee’s alleges that Beaver’s Mini Mart began using these marks after Buc-ee’s had already established its trademark rights and did so without permission. The complaint warns that the similar branding could confuse customers about whether Beaver’s Mini Mart is connected to Buc-ee’s.
The legal dispute has sparked a negative reaction in the community. Some residents have set up “cash mobs” to show their support for the Mini Mart. Other local businesses, such as Hot Heads Burritos, have also expressed solidarity, jokingly welcoming customers to “Hot Head Burrito-ees.”
This is not Buc-ee’s first trademark lawsuit; it has previously taken legal action against other businesses, including a chain called Mickey Mart in Ohio. Buc-ee’s recently opened its first store in Ohio this year in Huber Heights, where it attracted large crowds upon opening.
