Microsoft has decided to delay the launch of its new Copilot Plus PCs next week, as they will not include the controversial Recall feature that captures users’ activity on the laptops. The company is opting to test Recall with the Windows Insider program to ensure it meets their high standards for quality and security. Microsoft stated in an updated blog post that they are adjusting the release model for Recall and will provide details on how to access the preview version once it is available.
This means that Recall will not be initially available to Windows Insiders or new Copilot Plus PC buyers. Privacy advocates and security experts had raised concerns about the potential cybersecurity risks posed by Recall, prompting Microsoft to commit to major updates including making it an opt-in feature, encrypting the database, and authenticating through Windows Hello.
The Recall feature uses AI models within Windows 11 to capture and store users’ computer activity locally for personal retrieval. Microsoft’s decision to delay Recall coincides with their focus on prioritizing security, as highlighted by vice chair and president Brad Smith’s testimony before the House Homeland Security Committee. Smith emphasized the importance of cybersecurity and announced that security will now be a mandatory component of employee reviews and compensation at Microsoft.
