Study finds popular weight-loss and diabetes medications may be linked to reduced risk of certain cancers

A recent study published in JAMA Network Open has revealed promising findings for individuals with type 2 diabetes who are taking GLP-1 drugs. These medications, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, were found to significantly reduce the risk of being diagnosed with 10 out of 13 obesity-related cancers. The study, conducted by researchers from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and the MetroHealth System, analyzed medical records of nearly 1.7 million people with type 2 diabetes.

Excess weight has long been linked to an increased risk of various cancers, with about 40% of new cancer diagnoses in the US being associated with excess weight. The study showed that GLP-1 drugs can decrease the risk of gallbladder, pancreatic, and liver cancers, among others. These medications interact with systems related to insulin production, potentially influencing cancer risk.

However, the study did not find a reduced risk for postmenopausal breast cancer, the most common type of cancer associated with obesity. Additionally, there was no significant difference in cancer diagnosis risk between individuals treated with GLP-1 drugs and those treated with metformin. Further research is needed to fully understand the relationship between these drugs and cancer prevention.
