New AI Technology Reveals Surprising Discovery in Raphael Painting
Artificial intelligence (AI) has once again proven its worth by uncovering a hidden secret in a classic Raphael painting. The AI neural network has identified an unusual detail about a face in the painting “Madonna della Rosa” – it wasn’t actually painted by Raphael.
The face in question belongs to St Joseph, a figure in the painting that has been at the center of a long-standing debate among art scholars regarding its authenticity as a Raphael original. A team of researchers from the UK and US developed a custom analysis algorithm based on Raphael’s known brushwork to delve deeper into the mystery.
Using deep feature analysis, the computer was trained to recognize Raphael’s unique style, uncovering that while most of the painting bore Raphael’s signature, St Joseph’s face showed signs of being executed by another artist, possibly Giulio Romano, one of Raphael’s pupils.
This groundbreaking discovery showcases how AI technology can assist in art authentication processes without replacing human expertise. The study, published in “Heritage Science,” highlights the importance of combining technology and traditional methods in unraveling the mysteries of classic artworks.
