Apple reduces self-driving car project

Apple decides to stop making a self-driving electric car project. This is a big change. Apple has been working on this secret project for about ten years.

Two weeks ago, Apple was testing 67 self-driving cars in Sunnyvale, California. But Apple told the employees this week that they have canceled the car project. They want workers to work on generative artificial intelligence now, says Bloomberg News.

Apple did not want to say anything more. Even though Apple was testing more self-driving cars over the last year, it was still behind other companies in the industry. Only Alphabet’s Waymo is offering driverless taxi rides to people in San Francisco and Phoenix.

Apple was planning to make cars that can drive themselves. But they changed the plan and were working on making driver-assistance features. These features are like the ones made by Tesla.

Apple employees working on the project, called “Project Titan”, felt surprised Tuesday by the news that the company canceled the car project. The decision comes after Apple tested its self-driving cars for more than 450,000 miles in California between December 2022 and November 2023. The company tested more cars than the year before.
