Artemis II Crew Experiences Overview Effect Shift

The Artemis II astronauts flew around the moon and saw amazing views. Pilot Victor Glover called the sights “sci-fi.” He said, “You can actually see a majority of the moon.” The crew saw meteors hitting the moon’s surface. This view reminded them of how unique Earth is.

When the crew spoke to Earth again, astronaut Christina Koch felt amazed. She said they will explore space but will always choose Earth. They want to inspire others while staying close to home.

Astronauts often feel a strong love for Earth after seeing it from space. This feeling is called the “overview effect.” Frank White, a writer, came up with this name in 1987. He said viewing Earth reminds astronauts that borders are not real.

Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen shared his thoughts, too. He felt transported to the moon. He said seeing Earth was a fantastic experience. He was grateful for it.

Astronauts like Mark Kelly and William Shatner believe we need to take care of our planet. They feel sadness about how we harm it. Glover encouraged people to live differently after such experiences.
