China has taken the lead from the United States in a list of the world’s fastest supercomputers. This is important because it shows China’s growing power in advanced technology.
China’s new supercomputer, LineShine, ranks as the most powerful in the world. It surpassed the American supercomputer El Capitan in a ranking announced in Hamburg, Germany. LineShine, found at the National Supercomputing Centre in Shenzhen, can perform 2.198 exaflops, making over 2 quintillion calculations every second. This puts it 20 percent ahead of El Capitan.
This is the first time since 2017 that a Chinese system has topped the list. El Capitan had held the top position since November 2024. Other supercomputers in the top five include Frontier, Aurora, and Jupiter, with countries like the UK and Japan also represented.
Experts believe this achievement shows China can develop advanced technologies even with US restrictions on some parts. Jack Dongarra, a computer science professor, said the development of LineShine shows China responding through investment and improvement in technology.
In the last few years, China had fewer supercomputers in the ranking, but this success may change the competition in the field of AI and supercomputing.
