Oprah Discusses Whitney Houston’s Stage Fall After Drug Relapse

Oprah Winfrey recently revealed details about Whitney Houston’s final years, notably an incident during a 2009 taping of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” where the singer fell off the stage. This disclosure emerged during Winfrey’s appearance at the Cannes Lions festival, where she received the LionHeart Award. The account highlights Houston’s struggles with drug addiction, which had resurfaced at that time.

Winfrey recounted that the incident occurred shortly after Houston relapsed in her long battle against substance abuse. “This was an amazing thing that happened. I had such trust from the ‘Oprah Show’ audience that Whitney did, I think, what was her last show with us,” Winfrey stated. Contrary to her earlier state during backstage interviews, Houston was not sober during the performance when she fell.

In an effort to protect Houston’s reputation, Winfrey swiftly acted to shield the incident from public scrutiny, fearing that its revelation would significantly harm the singer’s already fragile state. “I knew that if that story got out… she would be destroyed by that,” Winfrey explained. Despite an audience present with cameras, she pleaded to refrain from releasing images of the fall, which they ultimately did not publish.

Houston’s performance during the show aimed to mark her comeback after a prolonged absence from the music scene. She was promoting her album “I Look to You,” her first studio release in seven years. The fall occurred while she was performing “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength,” a poignant moment that reflected her ongoing struggles.

Houston, a celebrated artist with multiple Grammy awards, faced immense public scrutiny regarding her personal life. She died in February 2012 at the age of 48, with accidental drowning classified as the cause, aggravated by heart disease and cocaine use.
