Could Jupiter’s Great Red Spot be a fraud? Enormous storm might not be the same one identified 350 years ago

New Study Reveals Surprising Truth About Jupiter’s Great Red Spot

A recent study has challenged our long-held belief that Jupiter’s Great Red Spot is the same as the “Permanent Spot” observed by Italian astronomer Giovanni Cassini in 1665. According to the study, the Great Red Spot is actually a newer, younger storm that appeared in 1831, distinct from Cassini’s original observation.

Led by planetary scientist Agustín Sánchez-Lavega, the research suggests that the original spot likely disappeared between the 18th and 19th centuries. Through computer simulations, the team theorizes that wind instability played a key role in the formation of the Great Red Spot.

Despite its historical significance, the Great Red Spot is shrinking in size. Further simulations will determine its future, raising questions about whether it will eventually vanish and reappear as a new vortex.

Published in the Geophysical Research Letters, this study offers new insights into the mysterious storm on Jupiter’s surface.
