A class action lawsuit has been filed against The Walt Disney Company for using facial recognition technology at Disneyland entrances. This case is important because it raises concerns about privacy and how companies handle personal data.
The lawsuit began on Friday with lead plaintiff Summer Christine Duffield. She claims Disney does not clearly explain how it uses facial recognition. Duffield visited Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Park in May. Her lawyer, Blake Hunter Yagman, says she is worried about her privacy rights.
The lawsuit seeks at least $5 million. Yagman stated that families should not give up their privacy when visiting a popular theme park like Disney. He noted that facial recognition is becoming more common and that it is vital to protect people’s privacy rights.
Disney has not yet commented on the lawsuit. On its website, the company says the technology is optional and helps with easier re-entry to the parks. They claim all data is deleted within 30 days and that there are separate entrance lanes without the technology.
The suit argues that guests should clearly choose to use facial recognition by giving written consent. It also mentions that notices about this technology may be hard to see, making it difficult for guests to opt out. Similar lawsuits have been filed against other companies, highlighting growing concerns about privacy in public spaces.
