New York City has started a trial program to test gun detection technology in the subway system, Mayor Eric Adams announced. The technology will be installed at certain subway stations in the next month to enhance safety and prevent shootings. Similar technology is already in use at the Met, Citi Field, and other locations. The gun detectors will be placed before the turnstiles, and randomly select individuals will be screened. People can opt out, but won’t be allowed to enter the subway if they refuse. The New York Civil Liberties Union and the Legal Aid Society have raised concerns about privacy violations, but the NYPD insists the technology is legal and necessary for public safety. Deputy Commissioner Michael Gerber believes the technology is justified under the Fourth Amendment. Stay tuned for updates on this evolving story.
