Infinity Ward revealed significant details about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on Thursday, 28 May. The studio emphasised that the game will maintain a realistic atmosphere, avoiding the extravagant cosmetics and collaborations seen in recent titles. On their X account, they stated that all elements of the game will align with its narrative, ensuring authenticity in cosmetics and collaborations.
In a direct response to fan concerns, the studio confirmed that popular figures such as singer Nicki Minaj and cartoon characters Beavis and Butthead will not appear in the game. The Call of Duty Community Manager further assured players that celebrities like Lady Gaga and cartoon characters like SpongeBob SquarePants will not be included either.
Nicki Minaj appeared in earlier Call of Duty games alongside other artists. While the trend of incorporating celebrities started with Snoop Dogg in Call of Duty: Vanguard, it has expanded to include various pop culture icons in recent titles. This history of unlikely character additions raises eyebrows among long-time fans.
Last year’s backlash against dubious collaborations in Black Ops 7 prompted developers to promise only sensible characters going forward. However, they did not firmly commit to keeping the game realistic, a promise now made for Modern Warfare 4. Fans will wait to see how this commitment translates when the game releases on 23 October.
Overall, early community feedback appears positive, with the official trailer gaining more views than previous releases. Infinity Ward also assured players that they will focus on enhancing the PC version while confirming compatibility with Nintendo’s Switch 2.
