Kristen Stewart fears the end of classic Hollywood cinema. She saw local theatres in Los Angeles being replaced by big shops. This made her want to help.
Stewart bought a historic movie theatre in L.A. She wants to save cinema in the city. The theatre she bought is the Highland Theatre. It used to host vaudeville acts, which are live shows with different performances.
The theatre closed almost two years ago. It was just short of its 100th birthday. The owner said the theatre could not survive after the COVID-19 pandemic hurt its finances.
Stewart said the building is beautiful but needs care. She wants to help the local film and TV industry, which has struggled for a long time. She feels people watch movies less in theatres now and prefer tablets and TVs.
Stewart hopes the theatre will be a space for families and filmmakers. It has three stories and can host events. This project aims to create a place for people to gather and share ideas. Other filmmakers have tried to save local theatres too. Stewart loves her city and wants to support it.
