Lawmakers Examine Rising Use of Chinese AI in US Firms

U.S. lawmakers are worried about more companies in the U.S. using Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) models. This is important because it highlights growing tensions between the U.S. and China on technology.

AI is a major area of competition between the two countries. Chinese models are becoming popular with U.S. firms because they work well and are cheaper than American options. In April, the Trump administration accused China of trying to steal U.S. AI technology and said it would look for ways to hold foreign companies responsible. China is also thinking about limiting access to its top AI models.

As more U.S. companies use Chinese AI, lawmakers are calling for investigations. Two U.S. House Committees will look into this issue. They sent letters to companies like Cursor and Airbnb about their use of Chinese AI.

Some American government departments have banned specific Chinese AI models, but companies can still use them. Some tech leaders say that using Chinese models can save money. However, investigators want to see if the U.S. has a good strategy to compete.

To address this, the government might create rules that limit the use of Chinese models. Yet, banning these models completely is challenging because they are available online.
