LinkedIn Halts UK Data for AI Amid Watchdog Concerns

Share

LinkedIn has suspended the utilization of user data from the UK for training its artificial intelligence (AI) models, following concerns raised by regulatory authorities. The professional networking site, owned by Microsoft, had previously allowed its global user base to consent to the use of their data for this purpose, albeit discreetly.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) expressed satisfaction on Friday, noting that LinkedIn has agreed to halt the processing of information from UK users. The organization appreciates this reflection on the potential implications of using such data for generative AI training.

LinkedIn has indicated its openness to further dialogue with the ICO. The ICO’s executive director, Stephen Almond, remarked, “We are glad that LinkedIn has taken our concerns regarding the training of generative AI models with data pertaining to UK users seriously.”

Numerous prominent tech companies, including LinkedIn, are exploring user-generated content as a novel data source to enhance AI tools. Generative AI systems—exemplified by chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT or image generators such as Midjourney—rely on vast amounts of textual and visual data to learn and create. A LinkedIn representative emphasized the company’s belief in empowering users to control their data, thus offering UK users the option to decline its use for training AI models.

The company maintains that it has consistently employed automation in its offerings while ensuring transparency regarding data usage options. Social media platforms often yield a wealth of user content that can inform AI tools, thereby enhancing their conversational capabilities. As stated, many individuals seek innovative ways to refine their professional resumes or to communicate effectively with recruiters, where LinkedIn’s AI services aim to provide substantial assistance.

This suspension will also extend to users in the European Union (EU), European Economic Area, and Switzerland. Other platforms like Meta and X (formerly Twitter) are similarly navigating regulatory challenges related to their ambitions of deploying user-generated content for AI training in these regions. Following significant criticism, Meta halted its plans for utilizing UK users’ public posts, and LinkedIn may face a similar regulatory journey before resuming its AI training initiatives. As Mr. Almond noted, ensuring public trust regarding privacy rights from the outset is paramount, and the ICO will actively monitor tech developers like Microsoft and LinkedIn to safeguard the data rights of UK users.
