Michael Bolton is battling glioblastoma, a particularly aggressive form of brain cancer that necessitated emergency surgery 16 months ago. Following this procedure, during which a tumor was fully removed, the renowned singer remained silent about his condition. Recently, however, he has begun to share his journey, expressing a “heightened sense of appreciation” for life and emphasizing the importance of making the best out of difficult circumstances.
“Surrendering to the challenge is not an option,” Bolton disclosed in an exclusive interview with People. “You quickly find yourself in a duel; that’s how you discover your true strength.” His daughter Taryn recounted the troubling symptoms that prompted the diagnosis. Initially noticed during a November 2023 charity event on Richard Branson’s private island, Bolton experienced nausea and balance issues, which were attributed to stress and overwork.
However, the situation escalated after Thanksgiving when he struggled with bowling and fell out of his chair, raising red flags for the family. “In hindsight, we missed many signs,” Taryn expressed. Shortly thereafter, Bolton underwent diagnosis and surgery.
Since his initial surgery in December 2023, followed by a second procedure due to an infection, Bolton has largely stayed under the radar. Although his chemotherapy and radiation treatments concluded last October, he has chosen to forgo a prognosis. “I want to keep fighting; there’s still much to accomplish,” said the 72-year-old artist, revealing he has a song title in mind: “Ain’t Going Down Without a Fight.”
As he reflects on his mortality while spending precious time with his three daughters and six grandchildren, Bolton mused, “A new light has revealed questions, especially about whether I am making the most of my time.” He continues to meditate and engage with voice and physical therapy, determined to recover fully. “Disappointing my fans is the hardest thing,” he noted, as he prepares for a phased return to performing.
