Online Chatbots Molly Russell and Brianna Ghey Spark Controversy

Chatbot versions of teenagers Molly Russell and Brianna Ghey were recently discovered on Character.ai, a platform where users can create digital representations of people. Molly Russell tragically took her own life at just 14 years old after being exposed to harmful content online, while Brianna Ghey, at 16, was murdered by two teenagers in 2023.

The foundation established in memory of Molly Russell strongly condemned the creation of these chatbots, calling it a “sickening” and “reprehensible failure of moderation.” Character.ai, the platform in question, claims to take safety seriously and removes inappropriate content once reported.

According to Andy Burrows, CEO of the Molly Rose Foundation, the development of these chatbots is extremely distressing for those who knew Molly personally. Brianna Ghey’s mother, Esther Ghey, also expressed her concerns about the dangerous and manipulative nature of the online world.

Chatbots, which simulate human conversation, have become more sophisticated with advances in artificial intelligence. Character.ai, founded by former Google engineers, has strict guidelines to prevent impersonation and harmful interactions. Despite efforts to improve safety measures, the platform faces legal action following the tragic suicide of a 14-year-old boy who interacted with an AI avatar on the platform.

Character.ai has pledged to enhance safety features for minors following these incidents to prevent further tragedies.
