On August 12, 2026, people in eastern Spain and the Balearic Islands will see a rare event. This event is a sunset eclipse. It is called a sunset eclipse because the Sun will be hidden by the Moon just before sunset.
In Mallorca, at 8:31 p.m., the Moon will block the Sun for 1 minute and 36 seconds. The Sun will be very close to the horizon. People will see a beautiful sight with unusual colours in the sky. The Moon’s shadow will make it feel like twilight, even though it will be nearly sunset.
After the eclipse, the Sun will go down into the Mediterranean Sea. This will happen about 18 minutes later. People will be able to watch the Moon’s shadow as it lifts away from the Earth. Observers in the Balearics will be the last to see the total eclipse.
This eclipse will mix the light from the Sun and the Moon. It is expected to be a strange and interesting experience for many.
