Salesforce co-founder Parker Harris recently spoke about CEO Marc Benioff’s controversial jokes about ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) during an internal meeting. Harris expressed that he was “not OK with it.” He described the jokes as “very bad” but chose not to publicly criticise Benioff.
An employee shared a transcript of Harris’s comments on a Slack channel, which Business Insider confirmed was accurate. Salesforce has not commented on the matter, and Benioff has not addressed the jokes or the reactions they caused.
Harris discussed why other leaders at Salesforce had not spoken out about Benioff’s comments at a recent company event. He noted that someone had already expressed concern, which was then leaked to the press. Harris stressed that discussing these issues should happen internally, not through media outlets. He stated that making such comments is a violation of the company’s Code of Conduct.
Employees expressed their anger on Slack. Rob Seaman, the General Manager of Slack, said he could not defend Benioff’s comments, which do not reflect his values. Salesforce Vice President Craig Broscow also mentioned the disappointment felt by many workers and suggested Benioff should publicly apologise.
Harris concluded the meeting by advocating for people to share their views through voting rather than through public actions. He encouraged ongoing discussion about the issue while keeping it confidential.
