The San Francisco film community is grieving the deaths of Judy Wyler Sheldon and her husband, Wylie Sheldon. They were found dead on Monday evening in a running SUV near Redding, California. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said this incident is “medically related.”
Judy Sheldon, aged 84, was the daughter of famous filmmaker William Wyler. She led the San Francisco Silent Film Festival for many years. Both Judy and Wylie, 86, were known for their kindness. Many people enjoyed their hospitality at their home in San Francisco.
Anita Monga, the artistic director of the festival, expressed sadness in an email. She highlighted how Judy and Wylie were supportive and positive at all events. The couple was discovered at around 5:46 p.m. on June 15 in a 2022 Jeep Compass. Although the vehicle was running, they were unresponsive when officers checked on them. Medical help was called but could not save them.
Temperatures in Redding reached about 109 degrees that day, and it is unclear if this heat affected their health. Investigators are examining the couple’s journey to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland. The community is remembering Judy for her dedication to preserving silent film.
