British researchers have recently uncovered approximately 200 dinosaur footprints that date back 166 million years, marking what is believed to be the most significant paleontological find in the UK.
Investigative teams from Oxford and Birmingham Universities made this thrilling discovery in a quarry located in Oxfordshire, central England, after a worker noted “unusual bumps” while operating a mechanical digger to strip back clay, as revealed in a forthcoming BBC documentary.
The site boasts five extensive trackways, with the longest continuous footprint trail extending over 150 meters (nearly 490 feet).
Of the five trackways identified, four are attributed to a long-necked herbivorous dinosaur, likely a cetiosaurus, while the fifth set is believed to belong to a carnivorous megalosaurus, approximately nine meters long, recognized for its distinctive three-toed footprints equipped with claws, according to the University of Birmingham.
According to Emma Nicholls from Oxford University’s Museum of Natural History, finding such a multitude of footprints in a single location is exceedingly rare, as is the discovery of such extensive trackways.
This site has the potential to become one of the largest dinosaur track sites globally, she emphasized.
The momentous find will be profiled in the BBC documentary “Digging for Britain,” set to air on January 8.
Surreal Encounter
A dedicated team of 100 academics undertook the excavation over a week-long period in June.
This discovery follows a smaller-scale find in 1997, where 40 sets of footprints were also uncovered during limestone quarrying, with some trackways measuring up to 180 meters.
The researchers documented the newly found footprints through 20,000 photographs and constructed intricate 3D models of the site using aerial drone imagery.
This remarkable discovery is anticipated to yield insights into the interactions of dinosaurs, their sizes, and locomotion speeds.
“Knowing that a dinosaur once traversed this surface, leaving its imprint, is truly exhilarating,” remarked Duncan Murdock from the Oxford Museum. “You can easily envision it maneuvering through, extracting its legs from the mud as it moved.”
Richard Butler, a paleobiologist at the University of Birmingham, suggested that certain fortuitous weather conditions might explain the remarkable preservation of these tracks. “We speculate that a storm event potentially deposited sediments over the footprints, allowing for their preservation instead of washing them away,” he noted.
Quarry worker Gary Johnson, whose keen observation initiated the excavation, described the experience as mesmerizing. “Realizing that I was the first person to behold them was surreal—a truly spine-tingling moment,” he shared.
