Immediately after Spirit Airlines halted operations early on Saturday morning, competitors in the airline industry quickly stepped up to offer alternative travel options for stranded passengers and unsettled staff. The grounding of the Florida-based budget airline has prompted numerous major carriers to assist those impacted.
Various airlines have introduced measures such as discounted fares and additional flight capacities to accommodate Spirit’s displaced customers. In many cases, passengers who were supposed to fly with Spirit this weekend can find alternative arrangements without incurring exorbitant last-minute ticket prices. Several airlines are prioritising seats for Spirit flight attendants and pilots who no longer have jobs due to the sudden cessation of operations.
American Airlines announced its response by offering cheaper rescue fares and considering the introduction of extra flights on critical routes where Spirit operated. Additionally, American plans to facilitate transport for displaced Spirit employees and organise recruiting events in the forthcoming weeks for those seeking new employment.
Delta Air Lines has also committed to capping ticket prices and implementing fare reductions on routes shared with Spirit, maintaining these lowers fares for up to five days following the grounding. United Airlines has launched a website for Spirit customers, providing one-way fares capped at $199 for most affected cities, with special rates for longer flights capped at $299.
Southwest Airlines revealed it would set flat fares for Spirit customers at its airport ticket counters, with prices varying based on flight distances. JetBlue announced $99 rescue fares for customers as well as a continuation of its previous cooperation agreement for Spirit employees, offering interviews for roles within their operations.
For Frontier Airlines, Spirit passengers can obtain fares up to 50% off if booked by May 10, with specific conditions surrounding flight days. The carrier expressed support for Spirit’s role in promoting affordable travel options. Further updates on this situation are expected as more information becomes available.
