WARNING: Possible Measles Exposure at Two Eureka Sites | Lost Coast Outpost

Share

The Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services has issued a warning to individuals who may have been exposed to measles at two locations in Eureka. If you visited the Days Inn by Wyndham on Fifth St. on May 9-10 or the Providence St. Joseph Hospital Emergency Department on May 10, you are advised to contact the Public Health Branch at 707-268-2182.

Measles is a highly contagious virus spread through coughing and sneezing. Symptoms can take 7-21 days to appear and include fever, cough, runny nose, pink eye, and a rash. It is especially dangerous for young children, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems.

Unvaccinated individuals who may have been exposed are urged to get vaccinated within 72 hours to reduce the risk of serious illness. The MMR vaccine is 97% effective at preventing measles. Digital vaccination records are available through the California Department of Public Health for easy access.

A recent case of measles was reported in a family traveling through the area, prompting the health department to issue the alert. Anyone who was at the mentioned locations during the specified times should seek medical advice, even if not experiencing symptoms.

Remember to stay vigilant and seek medical attention if you suspect you may have been exposed to measles. Prevention is key to stopping the spread of this dangerous virus. Stay informed, stay safe, and protect yourself and your loved ones.
