Timothée Chalamet has candidly admitted that, prior to his role as the iconic singer Bob Dylan in the biopic A Complete Unknown, he was not well-acquainted with Dylan’s music. However, he has since embraced what he calls “the Church of Bob.” In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Chalamet expressed his “greatest hope” for the film, set to premiere on December 25, is that it serves as a “gateway” for a new generation to discover Dylan’s artistry.
Reflecting on his own journey, Chalamet shared that he first encountered Dylan’s music about five or six years ago, describing it as a profound gift that continues to resonate with him. He noted, “It’s remarkable music and art. It’s really vitalizing,” emphasizing the transformative power of Dylan’s work, especially in today’s media-saturated environment where finding meaning can be challenging.
In A Complete Unknown, Chalamet not only embodies Dylan but also showcases his musical talents by singing and playing instruments. During the promotional events, he has displayed various unexpected skills, such as his insight as a football analyst and his knowledge of pop culture.
Elle Fanning, who reunites with Chalamet in this film, expressed the comfort of working with someone she knows well, recalling their collaboration before Call Me By Your Name became a breakout success for him. In the film, Fanning portrays Sylvie Russo, a character inspired by Dylan’s former girlfriend, Suze Rotolo, whose influence on the singer was significant during his rise to fame.
Directed by James Mangold, A Complete Unknown invites audiences to explore the complexities of creativity and relationships through the lens of Dylan’s life. The film opens in theaters December 25.
