Monday, April 6, 2026, is a key day for human spaceflight. At 13:56 EDT, the Artemis II mission is set to break the record for the farthest distance humans have traveled from Earth. This record was last set by Apollo 13 at 400,171 km (248,655 miles). The Artemis II crew will reach 406,773 km (252,760 miles) from Earth on a lunar flyby.
The Artemis programme is NASA’s long-term plan to return astronauts to the Moon for the first time since 1972. It has five missions: Artemis I, II, III, IV, and V. Artemis I was a successful uncrewed test flight that launched on November 16, 2022.
The Artemis II mission launched on April 1, 2026, from Florida with four astronauts on board for a 10-day mission. The crew includes Reid Wiseman as commander, Victor Glover as pilot, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen as mission specialists.
The astronauts will check the spacecraft’s systems and conductscientific studies during the mission. They have a fixed menu of 189 food items for their journey. Artemis II aims to land in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego on April 10, 2026, after which the crew will return to NASA’s Johnson Space Centre in Houston.
