CEO Satya Nadella has significantly reorganised Microsoft’s senior leadership structure, introducing a new inner circle, as reported by Business Insider. This move aims to position the tech giant, which employs around 220,000 people, to compete effectively in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence (AI) landscape.
Nadella’s initiative to reshape the company responds to the increasing competition from smaller, agile tech firms. Insiders have stated that the traditional senior leadership team, often referred to as the SLT, has been effectively retired. The CEO has opted instead for smaller, more dynamic groups that operate closely with the operational aspects of the business.
This transition is noteworthy given past criticisms of Microsoft as a corporate environment where employees could become complacent. To thrive in the fast-paced AI sector, Nadella is adopting a more aggressive approach, emphasising speed and innovation. “The pace of this platform shift is faster than anything we’ve seen,” noted a source close to Nadella.
As part of his strategy, Nadella has dedicated time to focus on technical matters by appointing a new commercial CEO and an AI advisor to assist in reimagining Microsoft’s business model. Alongside these appointments, he has encouraged existing leaders to either commit to a more demanding work culture or exit. This restructuring has led to notable leadership changes.
A new corporate leadership team has been established to enhance company-wide operations, including Nadella and other key executives. He has also formed an engineering leadership group of around 35 individuals to foster a startup-like environment, favouring collaboration over hierarchical management.
Looking ahead, Nadella is also personally monitoring AI metrics weekly, indicating the importance of AI within the company’s future strategy. The introduction of a new Copilot leadership team further exemplifies this focus, with meetings held regularly to ensure alignment with Nadella’s vision.
