Sally Phillips, aged 81, has made a substantial donation of $90,000 to the YMCA of Central Florida in 2024, honouring her late husband, Ken Titus. This gesture is significant as it seeks to support programmes aimed at aiding individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, a progressive brain disorder that affects memory and daily functioning.
The donation comes after the couple frequently used YMCA facilities following Titus’s diagnosis with Alzheimer’s. Phillips explained that the funds will help keep her husband’s spirit alive. Their shared experiences included visiting the YMCA, where they found both social engagement and physical activity beneficial for Titus. Phillips actively looked after him, ensuring he remained connected and stimulated until his passing in September 2021.
Out of the total donation, $10,000 has been allocated to fund a free chair-fitness class specifically designed for those living with dementia. This class, offered at Parrish Health & Fitness Center, is intended to enhance mobility and socialisation among participants. The remainder of the funds contributed to installing a pool heater at the Titusville YMCA Family Center. This development allows the pool to remain operational throughout the year, facilitating swimming lessons and activities for individuals with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers.
The donation not only expands accessibility to physical activities but also promotes social interaction, which is crucial for mental well-being. Dr. Visalakshi Srinivasan, a geriatrician, emphasised the importance of social engagement for brain health, stating that interaction with others positively influences cognitive function.
Phillips’s act represents a profound commitment to fostering a culture of joy and activity, encouraging others to embrace life fully despite challenges. According to her, making the choice to engage in life is key.
