Sony will cease the production of physical discs for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028. This marks a significant shift towards digital distribution in the gaming industry.
The announcement was made by Sony Interactive Entertainment on its official PlayStation Blog. All new games released after January 2028 will only be available digitally, either through the PlayStation Store or select retailers. The company explained that this decision reflects a change in consumer behaviour, as many players prefer to download games rather than purchase physical copies.
Sony stated, “As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.” However, this change will not affect games that have already launched or those scheduled for release on disc before the cutoff date.
This move aligns with a broader trend in the entertainment sector, where music, films, and PC games are increasingly transitioning to digital formats. This shift helps reduce costs associated with manufacturing, packaging, and shipping while granting instant access to purchases for consumers.
Sony confirmed that new games will remain accessible through both the PlayStation Store and physical retailers, but future releases will not have physical disc versions. The transition aims to match how most players engage with games today, maintaining flexibility in purchasing options.
Looking ahead, Sony plans to focus on innovation in gaming access, ensuring a world-class experience for players and expressing gratitude for their support.
