In West Sacramento, summer really begins when Whitey’s Jolly Kone starts selling its famous peach milkshakes. From around July 4 until Labour Day, many people, including teenagers and families, line up for this popular treat at the 63-year-old drive-in.
These milkshakes are made from soft serve ice cream and peaches sourced from a local farm. The peaches are picked during the peak season, making them juicy and fresh. Customers often ask for them before they are available, but Whitey’s only serves them when the peaches are at their best.
Kevin Ericson, co-owner, shares memories of his grandfather, who used to prepare the peaches by hand. Today, they process thousands of cases each summer.
Whitey’s was established in 1963 by Ericson’s grandfather, Emile “Whitey” Boisclair. After retiring in the 1980s, the business passed to his daughter and son-in-law. Their children, who had their own careers in different fields, stepped in to continue the family legacy during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2023, Kevin and his sister took over, making some minor changes while still respecting their grandfather’s vision. Their aim is to keep Whitey’s feeling like a relaxed and welcoming place. With an affordable menu featuring burgers and milkshakes, they ensure that this family-owned business continues to thrive in the community.
