Anthropic Enhances Claude Voice Mode with Improved Models

Weeks after OpenAI introduced new conversational models and enhanced ChatGPT’s voice function, competitor Anthropic has announced an update to improve the voice capabilities of its AI, Claude. This enhancement, revealed on Thursday, allows users to select between three different models: Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku.

Previously, Claude’s voice mode, released last year and powered by the Haiku model, delivered rapid responses but struggled with more intricate tasks. With the latest update, its voice mode defaults to the most recent model utilised in text chat, operating at its quickest speed.

According to Anthropic, this updated voice mode is particularly beneficial for extended conversations. It assists users by providing feedback on their communication style, guiding discussions with clients, and facilitating brainstorming for market research.

Additionally, Claude’s voice function can integrate with applications such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Canva, and Notion. This capability enables users to manage their schedules, draft emails, or create documents directly from the AI’s interface.

In contrast, OpenAI’s voice features, though improved in conversational style, do not currently support such integrations, limiting its operational scope.

Earlier this year, Anthropic also introduced beta multilingual support for Claude’s voice mode, allowing users to communicate in several languages. However, users must specify their preferred language, which currently includes English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, and both Latin American and European Spanish.

This new voice mode is available to all users in beta form, although free users will only have access to the Haiku model and may connect just one app. Anthropic has not altered the voice model with this update and has not specified the underlying voice technology used, meaning that users may not experience enhancements in conversational features such as interruption management.
