Christopher Anne Affleck, mother of actors Ben and Casey Affleck, passed away in June following a long struggle with a terminal illness. She was 83 years old. The family shared the news on July 23, stating she had received her diagnosis in December 2025 and was expected to live for only six months, according to her obituary in The Boston Globe.
One of Affleck’s key wishes was to witness her grandson’s high school graduation. The family noted that she achieved this goal, attending the graduation on May 31, 2026, and passing away peacefully two days later.
Born in New York City in 1942, Affleck dedicated 35 years to teaching in Massachusetts public schools. Her obituary described her classroom as a welcoming space for all students, regardless of their backgrounds. A graduate of Harvard, Affleck was also deeply involved in civil rights movements. During Freedom Summer in 1964, she taught literacy classes to promote political participation among the Black community.
In addition to her teaching, Affleck was active in advocacy, volunteering for Barack Obama’s campaign and working with organisations focused on social justice. Even after her diagnosis, she continued her passion for activism.
Her five grandchildren became a central part of her life, with her family noting her pride in their achievements and her support for their questioning of authority. After her retirement in 2008, she remained engaged in various community causes.
