Christopher Anne Affleck, the mother of actors Ben and Casey Affleck, passed away in June at the age of 83 after a long illness. Her family shared this news on July 23.
Affleck, a civil rights activist and teacher, was diagnosed with terminal cancer in December 2025 and given six months to live, according to her obituary in The Boston Globe. She achieved one of her biggest goals just before her death: attending her grandson’s high school graduation on May 31, 2026. Sadly, she died peacefully in her sleep two days later.
Born in New York City in 1942, Affleck worked as a public school teacher in Massachusetts for 35 years. Her family praised her ability to treat all students equally, regardless of their backgrounds. Affleck graduated from Harvard and was deeply involved in civil rights movements, including teaching literacy during Freedom Summer in 1964.
She was also a key figure in her grandchildren’s lives, encouraging them to question authority and learn about social justice. After retiring in 2008, Affleck continued her advocacy, working on various causes, including the Barack Obama campaign and organizing for water justice in Palestine.
Even after her diagnosis, she remained active in her efforts for social change, illustrating her lifelong commitment to helping others.
