Failure to do this will result in Google Maps deleting your location history

Google Maps is changing the way it saves your location history, and it could have a big impact on how you access this information in the future. Until now, Google Maps stored your location history in your Google account on the cloud, allowing you to access it from any platform, including the web. However, starting in December 2023, Google announced that it would start saving your location history on your device instead of in the cloud to improve privacy.

The change doesn’t stop there. From June 9th, 2024, Google will begin deleting your location history saved in your Google account altogether. If you want to keep this data, you’ll need to transfer it to your smartphone or tablet before the deadline. This new policy means that after June 9th, 2024, you won’t be able to access your Timeline data on any platform other than your device.

Google has recently sent out emails to inform users about this upcoming change, giving them until December 1st, 2024, to transfer their location history to their device. To do this, make sure your device is running the latest version of the Google Maps app.

This change currently applies to the United States, but it’s possible that Google will extend this policy to other regions soon. So, if you want to retain your location history in Google Maps, be sure to update your app and transfer your data within the next few months. Stay tuned for more updates on this evolving situation.
