Alarming Increase in Teen Social Media Issues: Study

A new study shows that young people are using social media in a troubling way more since COVID-19. Researchers surveyed nearly 280,000 kids aged 11, 13, and 15 in 44 countries.

The study found that 11% of young people used social media in a problematic way in 2022, up from 7% in 2018. This is a concern for the mental health of European youth.

The report suggests we need to encourage healthier online habits. It found that mostly 13-year-olds struggle with social media, especially girls. Many young people spend a lot of time online, mostly for connecting with friends.

The study also raised worries about teenagers spending too much time gaming. Boys especially are at risk, with many spending long hours gaming each day.

Experts suggest we need to teach young people how to use the internet wisely and that parents, teachers, and authorities must help.
