AMD Reveals Plans for AI Chips to Accelerate Launch of Upcoming Models

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. is ramping up its efforts to challenge Nvidia Corp. in the lucrative artificial intelligence processor market by accelerating the release of new products.

During her keynote address at the Computex conference in Taiwan, AMD CEO Lisa Su announced the upcoming launch of the MI325X processor in the fourth quarter, with even more advanced models, the MI350 and MI400, slated for release in the following years. These new chips are designed to offer increased memory and faster data processing speeds to compete with Nvidia’s offerings.

With the demand for AI training systems on the rise, AMD is striving to capture a share of the market currently dominated by Nvidia. Su highlighted that the company’s existing MI300 products are still in high demand and that the upcoming models will be competitive with rival products.

AMD’s sales target for AI accelerators this year has been raised to $4 billion, showing significant growth compared to previous years. However, Nvidia remains ahead in the race, with estimates suggesting its data center unit alone could exceed $100 billion in annual sales, surpassing both AMD and Intel Corp. combined.

In addition to the AI processors, AMD also introduced its third-generation Ryzen AI processors, named Strix Point, designed for laptops. These processors combine mobile graphics, neural processing units, and the latest processing cores to provide enhanced performance for AI tasks.

Furthermore, AMD showcased new gaming-oriented processors for laptops and desktops, including the Ryzen 9 9950X chip, touted as the fastest consumer CPU in the world running at speeds up to 5.7GHz in boost mode.

Overall, AMD’s aggressive approach in the AI processor market signals its determination to challenge Nvidia’s dominance and establish itself as a key player in the rapidly growing AI industry.
