Betty White, an icon of American entertainment, is leaving her indelible mark on the nation’s postal system.
The cherished actress, renowned for her role on “The Golden Girls,” was honored with a new U.S. Postal Service stamp during an inaugural ceremony held at the Los Angeles Zoo on Thursday.
A throng of admirers, gathered behind barricades, erupted in applause as a blue curtain was drawn back to unveil the stamp, which features a captivating portrait of White set against a violet backdrop—embellished with lighter, bubbly motifs that reflect her effervescent spirit. Dressed in a blue polka-dot blouse, she sports an earring shaped like a pawprint, a nod to her deep affection for animals.
“As I created the stamp, immersed in Betty White videos and photographs, I felt as though I was crafting a portrait of a cherished family member,” remarked Boston-based artist Dale Stephanos. “I aimed to let Betty’s vibrant personality shine through.”
The illustration is inspired by a photograph taken by Kwaku Alston in 2010.
During the celebration, singer-songwriter Ellis Hall delivered a rendition of “Thank You for Being a Friend,” the beloved theme song from “The Golden Girls.”
Amidst the festivities, the sounds of a laughing kookaburra and other lively birds occasionally interrupted the speakers, a delightful occurrence for the animal-loving White.
“Animals were her children, and she cherished each and every one—whatever their size or shape,” noted Richard Lichtenstein, a member of the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association board. White had been a strong supporter of the zoo since its inception in 1966, remaining dedicated until her passing in December 2021, just weeks before her 100th birthday.
“Who could possibly not love Betty White?” Lichtenstein continued. “Her warmth, humor, and fundamental decency were infectious. Our country and city—indeed, even our Los Angeles Zoo—would greatly benefit from more individuals emulating her exemplary nature. Betty White left her mark on everyone she encountered.”
He expressed that White’s financial contributions and advocacy facilitated numerous exhibits featuring species such as chimpanzees, gorillas, and elephants.
“This zoo, its inhabitants, and this community meant the world to Betty, just as she meant the world to all of us,” remarked Amber McReynolds, chair of the USPS board of governors. “Betty White was indeed an American treasure.”
Attendees eagerly lined up to purchase panes of 20 forever stamps, pins, and notecards, eagerly seeking first-day cancellations near a churro stand, while children from a nearby school passed by.
“This stamp holds special significance—after all, is there anyone who doesn’t adore Betty White?” concluded Stephanos.
