FTC Calls Out AI Scanner for Deception: BBC Exposé

Share

US-based company Evolv Technology, which specializes in weapons scanning technology, will no longer be allowed to make unsupported claims about its products as part of a proposed settlement with the US government. The company had previously stated that its AI scanner, used in many schools, hospitals, and stadiums across the US, could detect all weapons. However, investigations by the BBC revealed that these claims were inaccurate.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has taken action against Evolv, emphasizing the importance of backing up technological claims, including those related to artificial intelligence. The FTC’s complaint alleges that Evolv deceptively advertised its scanners as being able to detect “all weapons”.

Evolv Technology aims to enhance security by replacing traditional metal detectors with AI weapons scanners. Despite the settlement with the FTC, Evolv maintains that its technology is effective in detecting concealed weapons like bombs, knives, and guns.

Following these events, the FTC has launched “Operation AI Comply” to address deceptive claims made by companies regarding AI technology. As the case progresses, some school customers may have the opportunity to cancel their contracts with Evolv. The final decision on the settlement will be made by a judge.
