One of the main controversies surrounding Xbox recently has been the handling of the Halo franchise. For years, Halo was instrumental in elevating Xbox in the gaming industry, similar to Mario’s role for Nintendo. The franchise popularised multiplayer gaming and console shooters, making every Halo launch a significant event. However, those days seem to be over.
Despite some positive feedback for Halo Infinite, post-launch issues have overshadowed its success. The Halo TV series was also poorly received, highlighting the franchise’s lost potential. In 2026, a new version, Campaign Evolved, is set to release, but it already faces criticism from some fans regarding changes to the original art and for being launched on PlayStation. This adds scrutiny to Halo, particularly amidst recent layoffs at Xbox.
YouTuber Rebs Gaming has noted a decline in Halo and directed attention to the studio’s leadership. He claims that studio head Pierre Hintze has been confrontational towards staff and has made inappropriate comments, with an investigation by Microsoft revealing no substantiated complaints. Some former employees corroborate claims of Hintze’s aggressive management style, suggesting it has created a challenging work environment.
Although some defend Hintze’s dedication, concerns remain about his interpersonal skills, which are vital for overseeing a large team. As Xbox undergoes significant restructuring, the Halo studio is expected to remain a priority, but further management changes may be necessary. Halo Campaign Evolved is scheduled to launch on 28 July 2026, for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5.
