The Iran war is affecting flights around the world. Jet fuel is running low, and prices are going up.
On April 21, Lufthansa, Germany’s largest airline, canceled 20,000 flights from May to October to save fuel. The airline says this will save about 40,000 metric tons of jet fuel, which has doubled in price since the war started.
Dutch airline KLM also canceled 160 flights for the next month. Other airlines in Europe and Asia are raising prices. They may also cancel more flights as summer holidays approach.
Fatih Birol, from the International Energy Agency, said Europe might have only six weeks’ worth of jet fuel left. The Energy Commissioner, Dan Jørgensen, warned that the fuel crisis is moving from high prices to a supply problem. Some EU countries are looking to share their fuel to keep flights running.
The Strait of Hormuz is closed, causing major problems for oil and gas supplies. Many European countries rely on fuel from the Middle East.
